NEW YORK CITY (WABC) — The New York City Marathon is still more than three weeks away, but for one runner, the race is about much more than crossing the finish line.
Jared Fiske will run in the Nov. 2 TCS New York City Marathon to raise money for Holocaust education, inspired by his grandfather, Holocaust survivor Mark Schonwetter.
Fiske said support for Holocaust education is deeply personal because it is part of his family’s history.
Schonwetter was just 3 years old and living in Poland when Germany invaded during World War II. He later survived the Holocaust and has spent years sharing his story to help educate future generations.
According to Fiske, preserving and teaching those stories remains a priority for his family.
Fiske’s fundraising efforts are aimed at supporting Holocaust education programs and helping ensure survivor stories continue to be shared widely and incorporated into school curricula.
The marathon will mark another way for Fiske to honor his grandfather’s legacy while raising awareness about the importance of Holocaust education.
The TCS New York City Marathon is 22 days away.
