NEW YORK CITY (WABC) — NASA Astronaut Sunita “Suni” Williams is being honored in New York.
The United War Veterans Council named Williams as next month’s grand marshal of the New York City Veterans Day Parade.
“We are incredibly proud to welcome Suni as Grand Marshal of this year’s NYC Veterans Day Parade on the 250th birthday of the United States of America. Her dedication and service embody the values we honor each Veterans Day,” said Mark Otto, President and Executive Director of the United War Veterans Council and U.S. Marine Corps veteran.
Williams is a retired Navy captain and flew aboard several space missions.
She said it is an “incredible honor to serve as Grand Marshal of the NYC Veterans Day Parade and to march alongside my fellow veterans.”
The announcement on Tuesday coincides with the 251st anniversary of the U.S. Navy.
Williams was supposed to take top honors at last year’s parade but couldn’t make it because of the government shutdown.
This year’s parade will step off from Fifth Avenue at 26th Street on Nov. 11, starting at 12:30 p.m.
Channel 7 is proud to be a partner of the event.
