MIDTOWN, Manhattan (WABC) — New traffic patterns tied to the replacement of the Port Authority Bus Terminal are now underway as construction advances on the $11 billion project, affecting bus commuters and local traffic in Midtown.
Crews have begun removing ramps that carry buses from the Lincoln Tunnel into the 75-year-old terminal, a major step in replacing the aging commuter hub, which serves roughly 200,000 customers daily.
Buses entering Midtown through the Lincoln Tunnel are being rerouted onto temporary routes around West 39th Street and 10th Avenue to access alternate ramps into the terminal. The changes are expected to remain in place as crews continue dismantling the existing infrastructure.
Local traffic, already heavily congested in the area, is expected to face delays on West 39th and West 40th Streets, as well as Ninth and 10th Avenues. The morning exclusive bus lane will remain in place, but officials are urging riders to allow extra travel time, particularly during rush hours.
The project is intended to accommodate growing passenger demand and increasing bus traffic while improving accessibility throughout the terminal.
For commuters who rely on the terminal every day, the prospect of delays is a concern.
“Very bad business for us because we have to get to work on time and we’re not going to get a pass because the bus was late,” bus rider Clora Vernon said.
Still, Vernon said she understands the need for the work.
“Everything good. It comes with ups and downs, right? That’s right. They better make it nice,” she said.
Another rider, Joe Beya, said preparing for disruptions is part of daily life.
“That’s the way it is. You know, even in your everyday life, you have to be prepared for anything. You know, as long as you have the information on time and you plan your day ahead,” Beya said.
The route changes come as some New Jersey commuters are also dealing with disruptions tied to Portal Bridge construction, prompting many riders to use buses instead.
Groundbreaking for the project took place in 2025. Phase 1 is expected to be completed by the end of 2030, with the new bus terminal scheduled for completion in 2035.
