USA, New York: The New York Public Service Commission approved a $47.3 M Con Edison project in June 2025 to install a fifth 138/13 kV transformer at Parkchester No. 1 substation in the Bronx. A new 138 kV feeder from East 179th Street substation will supply the transformer.
The investment is intended to address projected load growth around Zerega Avenue and Hunts Point, including demand from electric vehicle charging and building electrification.
Con Edison identified 14 potential EV charging hotspots across its service territory. Further analysis identified four locations requiring urgent near-term investment, including the two Bronx areas.
The Bronx project was approved within a programme of 29 urgent upgrades across New York State. The commission authorised development and cost recovery for projects meeting its criteria for need, urgency, certainty and cost-effectiveness.
Con Edison’s nine proposed urgent projects had a combined estimated capital cost of $854.9 M and were expected to add 485 MW of incremental system capacity. They covered primary feeders, area substations, sub-transmission infrastructure and distribution systems.
East 179th Street substation, which will supply the new feeder, opened in 2007 as a $300 M facility housing two substations with a combined capacity of 900 MW. Its brick façade was designed to resemble Bronx rowhouses and blend into the surrounding neighbourhood.
