There’s some good news and some bad news for hunters getting ready for the opening day of firearm season for whitetail deer in Western New York. It’s been a strong archery season so far, with many hunters taking impressive bucks across the region. This past week may have been one of the best of the year, with deer activity reported just about everywhere.

Crossbow Season Success in New York State

From many reports, deer activity has been steady, and success rates have been high for those who’ve chosen to hunt with a crossbow this year. The new legislation that allows hunters to use a crossbow, with limited restrictions, has made a big difference. It’s opened opportunities for many hunters who previously had to wait their turn during archery-only seasons.

Firearm Season Forecast: A Mixed Bag

As we head into the weekend, the opening day forecast brings both good and bad news. Most areas in Western New York are expected to see a dry morning on Saturday, followed by rain in the afternoon and evening. For hunters heading to camp or the woods, that means an early start might offer the best conditions.

According to the National Weather Service, the forecast for much of Western New York is calling for early showers. “A chance of rain after 1pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 50. South wind 3 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%”.

Ask almost any hunter, and they’ll tell you that opening morning is one of the most exciting times of the entire season. The woods come alive with fellow hunters, the crisp air, and the sound of distant shots echoing through the hills. Deer are often on the move early, and if you find a quiet area with less hunting pressure, you just might catch a buck wandering as if no one’s been there all season.

Personally, I can’t wait to get to deer camp this weekend and spend time with my son. I’ve got four kids under nine, and my oldest will be joining me for his first opening morning. Throughout the season, I plan to take each of them out for some time in the woods.

We usually sit, talk, and enjoy a pile of snacks until we’re cold enough to head back to the truck or the cabin. Whether we see a deer or not, hunting season always brings unforgettable family memories.

Safety First for New York Hunters

As you prepare for the weekend, remember: safety always comes first. Some areas in New York State will allow rifles for the first time this season, so review the regulations before heading out. Always know your target and what’s beyond it, carry your license, and fill out your tags immediately after a successful hunt.

There are still plenty of big bucks out there, and with any luck, one of them will cross your path this opening weekend. Stay safe, enjoy the hunt, and make some great memories in the woods!
