RED HOOK, Brooklyn (WABC) — Behind an unassuming door in Red Hook, jewelry and custom motorcycles are being made side by side by a couple whose relationship began in 1998.
Katherine Lincoln Jewelry and Stiles and Jagger Moto share a workspace filled with tools, benches and equipment used for everything from setting diamonds to working on motorcycles.
The businesses are run by Katherine Lincoln and Eric Ross, who recalled meeting after Lincoln moved to the town where Ross grew up.
“You were in your white truck, the one we’re restoring, and then I was like, who is this guy?” Lincoln said.
“I still remember that day sitting in the truck. Later that day, I asked what’s the deal with Katie,” Ross said.
Lincoln later began making jewelry after the couple moved without jobs.
“We moved here. No jobs. Just wanted to be able to make my own stuff. Started in my apartment, and I just started making things,” Lincoln said.
That apartment eventually gave way to a studio where Lincoln creates custom jewelry and works with customers on pieces designed around their budgets.
“I just want to make it more accessible to so many different people, and I work with your budget, make a really cool piece that, you know, you’re gonna wear for the rest of your life. It’s an ancient process of casting. They can carve their own wedding bands. Just like another extra touch to make it more meaningful,” Lincoln said.
Ross built Lincoln’s first jewelry bench and continues to build pieces in their shared workspace.
“Built these two recently, but they’re basically start to finish, like everything. All the nuts and bolts, all the pieces, the paint. You know, it’s satisfying to come up with an idea and actually create it in the physical world, you know,” Ross said.
Their children also spend time working on projects in the space, including building a motorcycle with Ross.
“I don’t know. Just kinda always work that way. We’re always very supportive of each other and then to get to do it with our kids is even more meaningful, you know. We create our own environment in here, which is great,” Ross said.
The couple also credited each other’s approach to their work.
“She just puts people at ease and understands what they want and, you know, can connect with them,” Ross said.
“You just keep going. I’ve never seen anybody work so hard, and there’s a gentle giant in there in this big guy,” Lincoln said.
After years together, Lincoln said some of the spirit they had when they were younger remains.
“Yeah. I mean, you know, we’re just these crazy kids just trying to trying to do it,” she said.
