NEW YORK (TNND) — A man was shot and killed during an argument at a subway station in New York on Saturday afternoon, according to authorities.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) said they are searching for the suspect.

Police said the shooting was reported shortly before 12:21 p.m. on the northbound E train platform at the 53rd Street-Seventh Avenue station in Manhattan near Times Square.

Investigators said an unidentified man approached another unidentified man, displayed a gun, and fired once, hitting him in the chest.

First responders tried to save the man’s life at the scene before he was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Police did not release a possible motive or say whether the men knew each other. They also didn’t say what led up to the dispute.

The suspect ran from the station and was last seen heading north on Seventh Avenue, police said. He was described as a man wearing a red tracksuit, black vest and black face mask, and carrying a backpack.

The killing occurred in the Midtown North Precinct and Transit District 1, an area that includes some of the city’s busiest subway stations and tourist corridors.

Police asked anyone with information about the suspect to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS. Tips can also be submitted online through the Crime Stoppers website or through the NYPD Tips account on X.

The investigation is still ongoing, police said.
