According to Panuce, there is one important thing prospective adopters should know right away: Manhattan has very particular taste when it comes to treats.
“Well, we have to preface it by saying she only likes Milk-Bones. So get your Milk-Bones ready,” Panuce said. “I think she is a wonderful dog. Look at this temperament and personality.”
Manhattan showed off that personality inside the ABC7 studio, remaining calm despite the lights, cameras and activity around her.
Manhattan has recovered after being found as a stray with severely overgrown nails that had curved into her paw pads. She is now looking for her forever home.(wwsb)
“She’s here in the studio with all of the lights and the chaos that goes accordingly with this, and she is just having a ball,” Panuce said.
Manhattan has been at Manatee County Animal Welfare for about a month after she was found as a stray.
According to the shelter, she showed up at someone’s home having difficulty walking. Her nails had become so overgrown that they curved underneath and into her paw pads.
“When she appeared on somebody’s porch, she could barely walk because of that particular situation,” Panuce said. “But now, look at this. She’s perfect.”
Manhattan has since recovered and is walking normally. She also had a small benign mass removed from her eye and is able to see normally.
Because she is sensitive to the heat, Manhattan needs shorter walks and would be perfectly content spending plenty of time relaxing inside.
Shelter staff believe she is housebroken because she has not had any accidents during her time there.
She has also gotten along well with several dogs she has met at the shelter.
Recently, Manhattan visited an assisted living facility, where she quickly made friends.
Panuce believes her calm demeanor could make her a good therapy dog.
“She is a perfect therapy dog, and she’s quite good at it, actually,” Panuce said. “She loves people. She doesn’t rush anybody. She’s very, very gentle.”

And when it comes to finding Manhattan the right family, Panuce says there are plenty of possibilities.
“You normally ask me, what family could she fit into? The whole broad spectrum,” Panuce said. “She could be with children. She could be with a senior.”
Manhattan is available for adoption through Manatee County Animal Welfare, located at 5718 21st Ave. W. in Bradenton. For more information, call 941-742-5933.
