A month after losing her mother, Staten Island resident Jill Synmoie learned she had breast cancer. Her friend Stephanie Quintanilla sat beside her, taking notes as they spoke with her medical team. Doctors found abnormal calcifications during what was supposed to be her final follow-up. Her biopsy revealed ductal carcinoma in situ, a noninvasive breast cancer. She had a lumpectomy at Staten Island University Hospital last month. She is preparing for three weeks of radiation treatment starting in mid-November.
