New York City’s free 2-K program will expand to all five boroughs next fall, including every school district in the Bronx and on Staten Island, Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Gov. Kathy Hochul said Monday.

The expansion will give more than 12,000 children access to 2-K, up from the 2,000 who got seats during this year’s initial rollout, Mamdani said at a news conference.

Twenty-two of the city’s 32 school districts will be part of the program once the rollout happens, he noted.

“This truly historic announcement will save parents more than $25,000 per child per year, while transforming the lives of children by giving them the strong foundation they need to succeed,” he said.

“Next year, when placements are announced, families in the Bronx, on Staten Island, across our city will feel an enormous weight lifted off their shoulders,” he added. “And next winter, and over every year to come, our city will remain somewhere that parents can afford to live, to work, and to raise a family without having to sacrifice their careers, without having to move away from the neighborhoods that they love.”

The expansion will add seats in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, while increasing capacity in the five districts where 2-K launched: District 6 in Manhattan, District 10 in the Bronx, Districts 18 and 23 in Brooklyn and District 27 in Queens, the mayor’s office said in a release.

It will also cover all of Staten Island and every Bronx school district, the release said.

The expansion is part of the Mamdani administration’s broader push to expand access to childcare. Earlier this month, the city moved more than 10,000 children off a waitlist for free childcare vouchers.

The city said it will announce more details about the 2-K application timeline in the coming weeks.
