A 17-year-old Inver Grove Heights boy is facing murder charges for allegedly fatally shooting a 16-year-old boy in a park in Brooklyn Park this summer.
Nyzeir A’shoun Reay, 17, was ordered Tuesday to stand trial as an adult on the two counts of second-degree murder with which he’s charged.
Police began investigating after a shooting at Hartkopf Park on July 5 around 10:48 p.m. Law enforcement said about 50 civilians were at the park when the shooting happened; 16-year-old Immanuel Kowo was found with a gunshot wound to the head. He died at the park.

During surveillance the next day, police arrested a co-respondent in Brooklyn Park, recovering a handgun with an extended magazine and a drum magazine, according to the complaint. Forensic analysis showed the cartridge casings from the crime scene were fired from the handgun police recovered.

Court records say a witness to the shooting told police that although multiple people blamed the co-respondent for the shooting, they did not see the co-respondent fire the gun. Later, a second witness told police they saw Reay fire at Kowo.
Police say Reay and the co-respondent left the shooting together. Reay was arrested in Illinois and brought back to Minnesota, where he was taken to the juvenile detention center.
On Oct. 19, Reay waived certification proceedings and was ordered to stand trial as an adult, according to court records.
