AUBURN, N.Y. — Two BB guns were recovered from a BOCES student by the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday.

The sheriff’s office said that around 9:21 a.m., deputies were notified that a student at Cayuga Onondaga BOCES at 1879 West Genesee St. had two handguns.

The school was placed on lockdown, an emergency shelter-in-place order that bars any movement inside or around the school buildings.

BOCES staff contacted the juvenile student and confiscated the two BB guns. The student’s identity was not released.

Cayuga County Deputies, the New York State Police and the Auburn Police Department cleared the school and confirmed there was no present danger.

The lockdown was lifted by 2 p.m. and morning students have been dismissed, the sheriff’s office said. There is no anger among students, the school community or the public.

“The sheriff’s office thanks BOCES staff and responding agencies for their prompt response and cooperation,” the office said.

CNY Central has reached out to the sheriff’s office for additional information regarding the incident. Specifically, CNY Central asked if the student who had the BB guns is facing any criminal charges or if the student has made threats in the past.

As of 2:21 p.m., the sheriff’s office has not responded.

The Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the matter.
