JAMAICA, Queens (WABC) — A Queens man who was stabbed during a violent incident Friday night said he watched police shoot his girlfriend after officers entered the attic where they had taken shelter.

Edward Grant, 39, of South Ozone Park, said the events unfolded around 9:30 p.m. Friday at a home on 149th Street.

“It was very, very, very dramatic, very, very heartbreaking,” Grant said.

Grant said he and his girlfriend of more than a decade were sleeping in their attic bedroom when they heard a commotion coming from his girlfriend’s nephew’s bedroom on the second floor.

“My girlfriend’s brother, he was having a mental health issue, and snapped on us,” Grant said.

When he went downstairs, Grant said he found his nephew injured.

“When I get downstairs, the only thing I see is, my nephew, he was cut. He got cut on the shoulder, and a bunch of blood was bleeding coming out,” Grant said.

Koran Davis, 23, said he had been sleeping when he was stabbed by his uncle, 48-year-old Rashawn Donovan, who was visiting the home.

“It was just shock. Abrupt. And it was so fast,” Davis said.

Davis said Donovan came through his bedroom door.

“For that brief moment in time, we made eye contact briefly,” Davis said.

“And then Rashawn, he just had two knives in his hand, which is very aggressive down there,” Grant said.

“I locked myself in, the front of the house, the master bedroom and my grandparents the bed,” Davis said.

Grant said he and his girlfriend ran back to the attic, where she called police, and they locked the door.

“That’s when he kicked down our door and came up the attic. My girlfriend pepper sprayed him first,” Grant said. “He was charging towards me. I dodged out the way. That’s why I think I probably got hit, and I got stabbed right here. My arm and I just was trying to subdue him.”

Grant said his girlfriend took one of the two knives from her older brother. About 30 seconds later, multiple officers entered the attic.

“They told us to put your hands up and get down on the ground, which I did, I complied, Nicky was like in like a little corner. So, she really couldn’t get on the floor,” Grant said. I don’t think she realized she still had the knife in her hand. She was trying to get on the floor, but she had to step over me. The only thing I heard was, ‘oh, she got a knife or knife,’ and then, not even deem to give her a chance to drop the knife.”

Police shot the woman twice in the stomach, according to Grant.

“While she’s on the floor, already shot somebody, a cop tased her while she was already on the ground,” he said.

Police provided details about the shooting.

“There was no physical description of a perpetrator provided to the officers via radio,” an NYPD official said. “She was within several feet of the officers when an officer discharged his firearm.”

Authorities said four people were stabbed during the incident, including Davis, his father, Grant and Grant’s girlfriend.

Grant said watching the shooting was frustrating.

“I couldn’t believe what was going on. She was the one that was helping y’all. She was the one that threw the keys out the window for you to get in the house because he kept blocking the doors. Her brother, because he… we couldn’t get downstairs because if he would have went downstairs, we probably would have got stabbed,” Grant said.

Davis also said he believed police should have handled the situation differently.

“It was excessive,” he said. “I understand, like, officers have to act in a situation very, very fast and very quick. But I feel like they didn’t give her any time to at least disarm herself.”

The woman who was shot by police is in stable condition.

Donovan, 48, has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, assault and possession of a weapon.
