A 30-year-old woman was sexually abused early on Oct. 5 after an unidentified man followed her for multiple blocks near Lexington Avenue and East 57th Street in Midtown Manhattan, according to police. The attack happened around 12:05 a.m., and the victim suffered injuries to her jaw and hip before EMS arrived — though she ultimately declined medical attention at the scene.

Victim Declined Treatment After Attack

According to PIX11, the NYPD says the man sexually abused the woman after trailing her through the Midtown streets, leaving her with injuries to her jaw and hip. EMS responded to the scene but the victim refused further medical care, the outlet reports. Police have released a photo of the suspect, credited to the NYPD, as they continue searching for him.

Citywide Numbers Show A Mixed Picture On Sexual Assault

The Midtown attack lands amid a broader, complicated crime picture in New York City. Major crime citywide fell 5.9% in the first half of 2026 compared with the same period the year before, according to Vital City, but rape and felony assault were the only major crime categories that rose during that stretch. A separate Vital City report put the first-half decline in major crime at 5.6%, with rape up 6.9% and felony assault up 0.4% — figures that diverge somewhat from the 5.9% citywide drop and 0.3% felony assault rise cited elsewhere on the outlet’s own site, a discrepancy the available reporting does not explain.

Manhattan’s major crime fell 6.2% over the same period, per the outlet’s midyear detailed analysis, even as the borough’s overall major-crime rate stood at 388.7 per 100,000 residents and its violent-crime rate at 114.4 per 100,000. Citywide, New York averaged roughly six reported rapes per day in the first half of 2026, and rape remained 19.5% above its 2019 level, the same analysis found. Felony assault, meanwhile, has climbed for six consecutive years and now sits 47.7% above its 2019 level, according to Vital City’s figures.

Hell’s Kitchen Precinct Saw A Sharp Spike Last Year

Zooming in on the neighborhood just north of the Oct. 5 attack site, reported rapes in the Midtown North precinct — which covers Hell’s Kitchen — had soared more than 300% as of August 2025, according to W42ST. That jump was described as far steeper than the citywide rape increase of 22% recorded at the time, though the underlying precinct-level data behind the comparison was not made available. It remains unclear whether the Oct. 5 incident near Lexington Avenue and East 57th Street is reflected in any of the cited statistics.

The NYPD separately maintains borough- and precinct-level crime statistics updated weekly, alongside its CompStat 2.0 platform, though those figures were not cited in connection with this specific case. A 2024 snapshot compiled by the city recorded more than 565,000 total complaints across New York that year, underscoring the scale of reporting citywide even as individual cases like this one remain under active investigation.

No arrest has been announced, and the suspect’s identity has not been confirmed. Anyone with information about the man pictured by police is urged to come forward through Crime Stoppers.
