Sarah, who lives next door to the man, told PIX11 News that he was the super and lived there with his wife and three young children, ages 1 to 4. He was seen fighting with a suspected package thief outside the building before he died, she said.

Thefts in the building have been on the rise since May, according to Sarah. The super was heard telling the suspect that he planned to turn him over to the police, she said.

The man retorted, telling the super he would shoot him and his wife, according to Sarah. She said the super tried to grab the man, a fight broke out, and he was brutally beaten.

Police officers arrived at the building, and the super refused medical attention, according to Sarah. He decided to go back to his apartment. About two hours later, Sarah heard his wife screaming.
