New York state Assemblymember Amy Paulin and a coalition of faith leaders and elected officials held a rally in Westchester on Thursday to urge Gov. Kathy Hochul to sign a bill legalizing medically assisted suicide for terminally ill adults with less than six months to live.

The so-called “Medical Aid in Dying Act” passed both houses of the state Legislature this year after a more than 10-year battle.

There are strong religious objections to the bill and members of the disability-rights community have fought its passage.

Capital Tonight’s Susan Arbetter spoke with Paulin, who chairs of the Assembly Health Committee, to discuss why there is urgency among advocates for the governor to sign the bill.
