New York residents dreaming of a white Christmas may be in luck.
The Old Farmer’s Almanac recently issued a Christmas weather travel outlook detailing the forecast for the nation around the beloved holiday. In that outlook, it was revealed that snow is expected to impact the Northeast during the week of Christmas.
Other areas slated to receive snow around that time include the Upper Midwest, Lower Lakes, the eastern Ohio Valley and Alaska, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac.
While parts of New York may see some snow, those areas downstate, including New York City, may not.
As explained in the outlook, the Atlantic Corridor can expect sunny skies and minimal precipitation around the holiday. Parts of the Atlantic Corridor could see rain and snow showers eventually give way to sunshine. Generally, travel conditions in the Atlantic Corridor should be rather pleasant, as revealed in the outlook.
The Southeast, Florida, Heartland, Texas–Oklahoma and Hawaii are also expected to have pleasant travel conditions just around Christmastime.
Meanwhile, the Appalachians will initially see sunny skies in the north and showers in the south ahead of the holiday before snow arrives closer to Christmas.
The Old Farmer’s Almanac did not provide exact snowfall forecast amounts, however, the outlook did note that snow in the Northeast would most likely come in the form of showers. These snow showers could be capable of making roads slippery, potentially proving to be a problem for those traveling to see family around Christmas.
Although snow is expected to hit the Northeast and sunshine will prevail in the Atlantic Corridor, both regions can expect “very cold” temperatures, as noted by the Old Farmer’s Almanac.
Typically, the average temperature around Christmas in the Central Park area is about 36 to 37 degrees, according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration data from 1991 to 2020.
