The American Red Cross on Friday recognized the “Real Heroes” of Western New York.

Held in Depew, the annual event honors both people and animals who acted selflessly to help others.

In the case of Sir Squeaks a Lot, organizers say he went through a blood transfusion to save another resident of the Buffalo Guinea Pig Mafia Rescue.

Spectrum News 1 also sponsored the event, with anchor Breanna Fuss serving as emcee and reporters Mark Goshgarian and Viktoria Hallikaar presenting awards.
