STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — While the temperature might fluctuate occasionally, the cooler weather and shorter days have arrived. With winter right around the corner, staying inside and keeping warm with your pet can be a welcome change. Conversely, taking them out in freezing temperatures can be very uncomfortable in frigid conditions. But how cold is too cold?
Although it is challenging to make broad generalizations, most dogs shouldn’t experience discomfort from the cold until it drops below 45 degrees. At this point, those sensitive to the cold may start to feel uneasy. Small breed dogs with thin coats and highly young, old, or sick dogs may be at risk if they spend too much time outside when the temperature drops below 32 degrees.
This is Bonnaroo Buzz…
Meet Bonnaroo Buzz, a precious 3-year-old, 17-pound Dachshund/Chihuahua mix who is a chill little dude with rockstar-level snuggle skills!
Bonnaroo Buzz may be on the small-ish side, but he’s got a big heart and major cuddle energy. Recently rescued from a hoarding situation, Bonnaroo Buzz is learning that life can be good – – especially when there’s a comfy couch and a human lap nearby. Seriously, the second you sit down, he’s already halfway up!
Buzz isn’t really into toys or treats at the moment – – his favorite pastime is being pet and hanging out with his people. He’s got a mellow, easy-going vibe, and would happily binge- watch your favorite show right alongside you. He’s housebroken, walks nicely on a leash, and doesn’t bark much. Ya know the type…more soft acoustic than heavy metal! 😉
This gentle fella gets along with everyone – – dogs, cats, kids, and adults alike – – and he’s as sweet as they come. He already knows the command sit, but his real talent is melting hearts. If you’re looking for an adorable lap dog who appreciates love, affection, and good naps, Buzz is your backstage pass to pure contentment!

TIPS TO KEEP YOUR PET SAFE
Buy winter pet clothing – Because of their thick double coats, some dogs tolerate the cold weather better than others. However, short-haired pets are more prone to hypothermia and frostbite because they have less insulation. Dog booties can be pretty helpful in colder climates. They shield them from salt, ice, and snow, which can harm and crack their paw pads.Shorter walks – Lucky for cats, they never need to leave the house. Unfortunately, Depending on their size and lifestyle, dogs need to relieve themselves three to five times a day at the very least. Exercise is necessary, but safety is more important.Check under your hood for cats – Always look below your car before driving off to ensure you won’t accidentally hit a cat. Additionally, cats may enter cars through the hood or trunk. Given their intelligence, animals can figure out how to get into the engine area, which is the warmest part of the vehicle.Keep them clean – When walking, your dog may pick up potentially harmful substances such as de-icing agents, antifreeze, or other substances on their feet, legs, or belly. Wipe these areas off when you return inside to lessen your dog’s chance of being poisoned from licking them off. Use pet-friendly de-icers on your property to keep your pets and others in the neighborhood safe.Car safety – Never leave your dog or cat alone in colder weather. In the winter, an automobile can function as a refrigerator, trapping the cold and freezing the animal.

A message from Amanda:
I am a licensed rehabber with over 10 years experience, trained and under the guidance of medical professionals. As one of the few local licensed Wildlife Rehabbers here in staten island , I tirelessly dedicate my time and struggle to make ends meet out of my own pocket to save as many lives as I can. There is a dire need for Wildlife rehabilitation with an overwhelming amount of request for help coming from the community every single day. I strongly advise the public that when they find any injured wild animals, the best steps to take are the following: to safeguard the animal in a bin or box with air holes, keep warm, and most importantly, do not feed or give any fluids in your own. Then seek assistance from me or other wildlife Rehabber. (Courtesy/Amanda Lullo)Amanda Lullo
