NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) – New York City officials have declared a Code Blue with temperatures expected to drop under 40 degrees Sunday night.
The National Weather Service predicts temperatures will drop to 39 degrees overnight, then heat only to 44 degrees by Monday afternoon.

With gusty winds and colder feels-like temperatures, city officials declared a Code Blue from 4 p.m. Sunday to 8 a.m. Monday. During that time, teams will try to get homeless New Yorkers into shelters.
Drop-in centers and shelters will accept anyone looking for warmth during a code-blue, not just a person’s assigned shelter, according to the Coalition for the Homeless. Shelter suspensions and sanctions can be lifted during a Code Blue.
“New Yorkers who see individuals they believe to be experiencing homelessness and in need should contact 311 via phone or mobile app and request outreach assistance,” the Office of Emergency Management said.
Code Blue goes into effect when temperatures are expected to drop below 32 degrees, according to the Coalition for the Homeless. Officials also advise tenants to alert their landlord to any heating issues.
“Cold weather can be dangerous, and some people may be unable to safely leave their homes or operate heating equipment on their own,” the office said.
New York City could see snow flurries early in the week. Temperatures will remain low through Friday, when the high will be around 57 degrees.
