Former Texas Longhorns cornerback Kris Boyd is fighting for his life at Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan after being shot and critically wounded in New York City’s Fashion District early Sunday Morning. Boyd, who currently plays for the Jets, was shot in the abdomen outside Sei Less restaurant.

A spokeswoman for the New York Police Department would not confirm to USA TODAY Sports the identity of the victim in the shooting, per department policy, but said officers responded to a 911 call at a restaurant around 2:09 a.m. ET on West 38th Street and Seventh Avenue where they found a 29-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. The victim was transported to Bellevue Hospital in critical but stable condition.

The Jets have since confirmed it was the Texas Ex that was the victim in the incident. “We are aware of the situation involving Kris Boyd and will have no further comment at this time,” a rep said.

Boyd was shot after a dispute turned violent, with the gunmen firing two shots. Law enforcement sources told the NY Post the shooter fled the scene in a BMW X8 SUV. The source said witnesses were “uncooperative with cops.” The source went on to reveal a second vehicle, a high-end silver Mercedes-Benz Mayback, also fled the scene after the shooting.

Photos from the scene also show a Rhino GX, a luxury armored SUV manufactured by US Specialty Vehicles that sells for up to $300,000, parked outside the restaurant after police arrived. Boyd reportedly lapsed in and out of consciousness before he was rushed to the hospital.

Boyd, who has made around $8 million dollars in his career, was known as a solid special teams contributor. After signing a $1.6 million dollar contract with the Jets in the offseason, he was placed on injured reserve during training camp and was set to miss the entire 2025 season with a shoulder injury.

The Gilmer, Texas native played four seasons on the 40 Acres at defensive back. Boyd appeared in 51 games and made 33 starts. Boyd became a starter at cornerback for the Longhorns during his sophomore season. He was recruited by Charlie Strong, but played most of his UT career for Tom Herman.

As a senior in 2018, Boyd had 54 tackles, 15 passes defensed and a sack. He was named first-team All-Big 12 and invited to play in the Senior Bowl.

Boyd was a seventh-round pick by the Minnesota Vikings and also played for the Arizona Cardinals and Houston Texans.

The Jets have the weekend off after losing to the New England Patriots on “Thursday Night Football.”
