This weekend on In Focus, JoDee Kenney sits down with Monroe County Undersheriff Korey Brown to discuss the Protect Act. Brown says law enforcement is now opposed to bail reform, there just needs to be more adjustments made. He says the Protect Act addresses what Brown calls a huge problems with repeat offenders.
Brown says if you are charged with a Class A misdemeanor or felony, we really want a chance to hold on to you and not give you a chance to reoffend. He continues that he is looking for a clean law that will help. If you commit one of these crimes, law enforcement can hold you for 48 hours. For example, Brown says in the case of criminal possession of a weapon, Monroe County is holding 200 people on federal charges because there is a federal dangerousness standard, but not a state one. He says there are things we can put in place to mitigate the circumstances so you will not go back out an commit a violent act. Brown says just because you have money to pay for bail, doesn’t mean you should be released. Brown says the law is confusing and the Protect Act cleans that up.
