A New York City police officer was wounded in the face during a shootout with a homicide suspect in Brooklyn on Monday, law enforcement sources said.

The injured officer was at the scene of a homicide that occurred earlier in the morning in Brownsville when the alleged gunman showed up with a shotgun and opened fire, sources said.

The officer suffered wounds to his face and was rushed to a Brookdale hospital.

Both the hurt cop and another NYPD officer who were guarding the crime scene returned fire.

The shooter barricaded himself in the home at 1046 Thomas S. Boyland St. and later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, sources said.

The suspect has not yet been identified.

Police had been called to the address just before 6 a.m. after a 41-year-old man was shot in the chest, according to police.
