STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.— A Yonkers man pulled over on Staten Island with drugs and a gun in his car is headed to prison.
Anthony Smith, 33, was sentenced earlier this month to 11 years in prison, after a jury found him guilty of charges stemming from the 2023 car stop in New Brighton.
Judge Alexander B. Jeong handed down the sentence Nov. 5 in state Supreme Court, St. George. The top count alone carried a minimum sentence of three-and-a-half years prison.
Smith previously was convicted of first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the Bronx, and sentenced to 18 months prison, court documents show.

Queens-based defense attorney Nicholas Dayan did not return a request for comment Monday.
District Attorney Michael E. McMahon issued a statement Friday, saying in part:
“Staten Island has no place for those who possess illegal guns and narcotics on our shores and those who foolishly choose to do so will be met by the full force of our office. Sadly, Smith learned this lesson the hard way as a Staten Island jury wasted little time finding this dangerous defendant guilty at trial on all counts.”
McMahon went on to thank members of the NYPD for their work in the arrest and investigation, along with Assistant District Attorneys Nicole Juliano and Ann O’Connor who tried the case.
NYPD touts gun arrest social
Authorities said it was about 9:25 p.m. on Nov. 7, 2023, when NYPD officers pulled over Smith in a gray, 2018 Mercedes-Benz near Jersey Street and Corson Avenue.
The vehicle was missing a front license plate and the windows were tinted.
Smith was ordered out of the vehicle after officers allegedly spotted a white powder-like substance in the back seat. He was found in possession of oxycodone pills and a loaded 9 mm firearm, prosecutors said.
Hours later, the NYPD touted the arrest on X, formerly known as Twitter. The post read: “There is zero tolerance for gun-related violence in our neighborhoods.”
