CAIRO — Two New York State Police troopers were injured Monday evening when a vehicle struck them during a traffic stop on Route 23, according to State Police, in an incident that left the driver of the vehicle dead.

The crash occurred around 5:25 p.m., as the troopers — both assigned to State Police’s Catskill barracks — were conducting a stop along the roadway. The troopers were standing outside the vehicle they had pulled over when their patrol vehicle was struck by a third vehicle.

Both troopers sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to a local hospital for evaluation. They were later released.

The driver of the vehicle that struck them was pronounced dead at the scene. Police later identified her as Sharon L. Torres, 69, of Cairo.

State Police said the incident remains under active investigation and did not release additional details, including what may have led to the crash or how the driver was killed.

The westbound lanes between Ross Ruland Road and Silver Spur Road were closed after the crash.

This is a developing story. It will be updated later.
