Gov. Kathy Hochul thought endorsing Zohran Mamdani would win over his supporters; instead they’re now threatening to oust her if she doesn’t cave to their demands. Oops.
If Hochul blocks tax hikes on the rich to fund “universal child care,” warned state Sen. Jabari Brisport at a “Tax the Rich” rally Sunday, “she has to go.”
Brisport complains she’s shot down such plans twice before; “If you get a third strike, you’re out,” he threatened, to wild applause.
Another tax-the-rich crowd booed Hochul — to her face — when she took the stage at a Mamdani event with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders a few weeks ago.
Jumping on the Zohran bandwagon has clearly backfired, gov.
The radicals couldn’t care less that you endorsed him, and now they’re demanding you forswear your repeated vows to not raise taxes, a stand that was to be a key part of your re-election “affordability” agenda.
The gov’s in a bind: She must either deliver for Mamdani early in the legislative session, or the hard left will gun for her in the June Democratic primary.
We hope she finds her spine, because his demands mean disaster.
The mayor-elect wants the state corporate tax upped to 11.5%, from 7.25%; he argues that would just bring New York’s rate in line with New Jersey’s — but he conveniently ignores other taxes NYC companies face, such as the city Business Corporation Tax and the payroll tax for the MTA.
Those levies bring the actual NYC rate to 18.3% now; Mamdani’s hike would push it to nearly 23% — twice the Garden State’s.

How many businesses would be flee New York and cross the Hudson in that case — or move to Pennsylvania, which is cutting its corporate tax rate in half, or North Carolina, which is scrapping corporate taxes altogether?
As incoming Partnership for New York City head Steven Fulop (a Democrat) puts it, Mamdani’s hike means “absolute suicide for NYC and an absolute dream” for Jersey.
Buck up, governor: You know this tax hike would be poison, and the far left is not the deciding factor in statewide elections, not even in a Democratic primary.
Suburban voters, and the half of Gotham that voted against Mamdani, will thank you for denying his insane agenda.
Hochul has always aimed to represent the sane center of New York state; her best bet for winning in June and November is to stick with the brand that’s always won for her.
Now that the hard left has shown its true colors, she should hold her own flag high.
