A 4-year-old girl has died after being struck by a school bus in Upstate New York.
The child was hit by a Panama Central School District bus on Monday morning, according to the Jamestown Police Department. WIVB reports police were called to reports of a motor vehicle accident at Milton J. Fletcher Elementary School in Jamestown, N.Y., around 8:10 a.m.
Police said they rendered first aid to the child, who was taken to UPMC Chautauqua at WCA Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
The girl’s name has not been released, but the Panama Central School District confirmed that she was a student in the Jamestown City School District.
“We are heartbroken by this devastating news, and our thoughts are with the student’s family and friends,” Jamestown Public Schools Superintendent Kevin Whitaker said in a statement. “This is an unimaginable loss for the Fletcher community and for all of Jamestown Public Schools.”
WKBW reports the bus involved was on the way to drop off a student for an out-of-district placement. There was one student on the bus along with the driver at the time of the incident; neither was injured.
Additional details have not been released. No charges have been filed as of Tuesday morning; an investigation is ongoing.
Whitaker said Fletcher Elementary School’s Crisis Intervention Team will be available for students, parents and school staff. Counselors are also available for any student who may need or want help or any type of assistance surrounding the loss.
