New York City’s after-school expansion will continue next school year, with another 10,000 seats slated to come online by the fall, the Adams administration announced Tuesday.
The increased capacity will be spread across 75 public schools and 11 community centers, and were selected based on economic need and service gaps.
Queens schools are expected to receive two dozen new programs, the most of any borough in the next phase of the expansion, according to a Daily News analysis of school sites. Brooklyn and the Bronx will get 17 each, Manhattan 10, and Staten Island seven.
Eight of the schools are charters, meaning they’re publicly funded but privately run. They include locations of the KIPP and Achievement First charter networks.
The city will also increase provider rates for the first time in a decade, fulfilling a long-standing demand by child advocates, who say it will improve program stability.
The next phase of the expansion comes on top of 5,000 program slots that were added at 40 schools this year. Mayor Adams, who later dropped his bid for reelection, unveiled his plan in April to add 20,000 after-school seats over the next few years, with a total price tag of $331 million at full implementation.
“We’re giving young people the opportunities they deserve and telling hard-working parents: We see you and we’re investing in your future,” Adams said in a statement.
