NEW YORK (WBNG) — The New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, or DOCCS, is closing Bare Hill Correctional Facility, located in New York’s north country.
The decision was made after a thorough review, during which the DOCCS looked at a variety of factors, including physical infrastructure, program offerings, and faculty security level.
Bare Hill will close on March 11, 2026.
All 239 staff members will be offered positions at other facilities, and neighboring correctional facilities will house the incarcerated population.
The DOCCS stated that there are more than 650 vacant positions at correctional facilities in Franklin, Clinton, and Essex counties, which will ensure that staff members are not laid off.
In addition to the closing of Bare Hill, the Collins Correctional Facility in the town of Collins will be consolidated in a department effort to ease staffing concerns.
DOCCS officials said they will work with labor unions to build on efforts to recruit staff and monitor the effects the closures have on Department staffing and operations.
