HOLLIS HILLS, Queens (WABC) — Police are searching for a suspect after a teen boy was shot in Queens on Tuesday.
Officials say a 16-year-old boy was shot in the chest near the intersection of Springfield Boulevard and Union Turnpike just before 3 p.m. in the Hollis Hills section.
Eyewitness News obtained surveillance video of the moments before gunfire broke out.
The footage shows a scuffle break out between a bunch of kids. One of them is shoved to the ground. Everyone notices what’s going on because they stop and stare, and then they start running when those gunshots are fired.
The victim was taken to Cohen Children’s Medical Center. Officials say he was alert and semi-conscious while being rushed to the hospital, and is now in stable condition.
Police say the suspect was with a group. He opened fire and fled in the direction of a nearby BP gas station.
Shannon Sohn reports from above Hollis Hills, Queens.
No arrests have been made, but police believe the suspect is also a teen.
The intersection of Springfield Boulevard and Union Turnpike is chock full of small businesses.
Eyewitness News spoke with workers at some of the businesses who heard those shots. They say that every day, once school lets out, the area becomes chaotic with kids getting into fights.
“the kids are coming here every day, so it’s going to be chaos every day, like usually some days,” said deli worker Anant Patel. “Yesterday, the same thing happened, yesterday they were still fighting in front of my store… and I called the cops as well yesterday, and the same group — I think some of them I see are the same.”
Investigators are trying to figure out if the shooter and the victim know each other, and what led up to shooting.
