STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center is drawing attention to what it believes will be a “significant” change in the weather pattern across much of the U.S.
As noted by the Climate Prediction Center, November has largely been cold in the East and warm in the West. Yet going forward, a number of factors may come into play and trigger a shift in temperatures that will extend through the end of the month and into December.
During the week of Thanksgiving, the Climate Prediction Center foresees milder conditions prevailing in the East. New York is expected to generally experience “near normal” temperatures from Nov. 26 to Dec. 2.

For reference, the Central Park area usually experiences an average temperature of 42-44 degrees Fahrenheit around Thanksgiving, according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration data.
Meanwhile, the Southeast is slated to experience above-average temperatures and the Pacific Northwest has favorable odds of colder-than-average conditions.
However, the weeks that follow Thanksgiving are forecast to see some cold air persist across much of the northern portion of the U.S.
While above-average temperatures may still impact parts of the Southeast, the Northeast and Midwest are likely to experience particularly cold temperatures.
The entire state of New York has a 33-40% probability of recording below-average temperatures from Nov. 29 through Dec. 12.
Average temperatures in Central Park usually range from 40 to 43 degrees Fahrenheit during these two weeks, as indicated by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration data.
This potential shift in the weather pattern can be attributed to a combination of factors including La Niña, the Madden-Julian Oscillation and a potential Sudden Stratospheric Warming event before the end of the month.
