A disturbing discovery at a public housing complex in Brooklyn has left residents shaken and searching for answers.

Police said officers responded to a 911 call just after 11 a.m. Thursday at the Bay View Houses in Canarsie. When they arrived, they found an unconscious and unresponsive male infant. However, sources told NY1 the victim did not appear to be a full-term newborn, but was a fetus.

Police say a fetus was found outside the Bay View Houses in Canarsie on Thursday morning

Sources tell NY1 it was discovered inside a black bag under a pile of leaves

Residents have created a makeshift memorial as the community processes the news

No arrests have been made and police have not said whether there were signs of trauma

“Make me feel destroyed. That sucks. I can’t believe it. It happens. I feel sorry for the mother. She’s probably going through a lot of stuff, but it happens you know,” said Charles Johnson, a resident at the Bay View Houses.

Sources said the fetus was discovered inside a black bag under a pile of leaves. It remains unclear how long the body had been there or what led to the incident.

“I cried this morning. I cried because I’m a mother and a grandmother. I have kids and grandkids, and we live here. If you’re going through something and you’re pregnant, reach out to somebody, please talk to somebody,” said another resident, Lisa Daroche.

The discovery has united residents, many of whom created a makeshift memorial with candles, balloons and stuffed animals.

“The child involved is different. It’s something that the community comes together about because we got kids,” Johnson said.

One longtime resident, who declined to show her face on camera, tried to make sense of the tragedy, saying, “It’s something that teenagers do because they don’t have the resources to understand what they’re going through. And I think something happened and they panicked, and they put it away, in the wrong way.”

Police have not said whether there were signs of trauma. No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.
