A recently published piece by WalletHub has identified the states where college education costs the most and least, and I don’t think you’ll be surprised where New York came in.

It should also not come as a surprise that the cost of attending college has been steadily rising over the years, with research from educationdata.org citing that the ‘average cost of college has more that doubled in the 21st century.’

The study, which is reflective of 2025 rates, indicates that the average public in-state 4-year college cost for a student living on campus is $27,146 per academic year, while on the privite side, $58,628 per year.

A recent study published by WalletHub analyzed states where people spend the most and least on education, and New York took home third place with 68.33% for cost of education as a share of median annual household income.

Falling only behind Pennsylvania with 72.48% and Rhode Island with 71.16%, and Massachusetts trailing behind New York with 62.22%.

The WalletHub research indicated that in New York, it costs an average of $57,788 per academic year, inclusive of in-state tuition, room and board, and other ‘college costs.’ This compared to the state’s median household income of $84,578 is where the 68.3% number came from for the rankings.
