There was a spotting of a mountain lion in Amherst, New York earlier this week. One person believed that they saw the big cat far in a field in their yard and in the video, it certainly looked like it could be a mountain lion.
The New York State DEC came to investigate and they determined that the video was, in fact real, but that it was not a mountain lion. What was it then if it was not a mountain lion? Apparently, it was a oversized cat. If you watch the video though, it seems kind of hard to believe. But, on the other hand, you would think that there would be SOMEONE ELSE who saw a mountain lion trotting around Western New York.
The New York State Department of Conservation says that they do get a bunch of calls for mountain lions throughout the year, but most of them are false and mistaken for bobcats, fishers and coyotes, as well as domestic housecats and dogs.
Someone said that the New York State DEC released a mountain lion to take care of the massive deer population and problem in New York State. The rumor even had a specific officer mentioned in it and the DEC released a statement sayin that it is not true:
Some of these rumors claim that Officer ‘Jones’ participated in the release, or that people have actually seen cougars with ear tags or neck collars, so they must have been released by the state. This is not true.
What other animals have been spotted around New York State? There have been quite a few bobcat sightings in Western New York especially in the southern tier where there are a lot farms on open land.
