A 19-year-old woman shot and killed Saturday night has been identified as a Monroe University student.

Amira McCleod was killed during an off-campus gathering, according to a statement from Monroe Vice President of Public Affairs Jacqueline M. Ruegger.

McCleod was “a cherished member of our Express women’s basketball team,” the school’s statement read. “We are in close contact with Amira’s family, teammates, and roommates, offering our full support as they navigate this unimaginable loss.”

Hempstead Police remained on the scene of the deadly triple shooting Sunday evening.

Investigators say the shooting took place in the area of Kennedy and Willow Avenues. A “Shot Spotter” alerted officers to the shooting just before 11PM Saturday night. McCleod was pronounced dead at the scene. Two men, each 20-years-old, were taken to a hospital where they are recovering. Their names have not been released.

Authorities have not commented on a possible motive for the attack.

According to the Monroe University athletics website, McCleod was from Queens, and started with the team last season. She majored in Business Administration. In an online survey for her team, she said her dream job was “to have my own clothing and sneaker store” and chose the Bronx school “to be surrounded by a group of people who care about me but also my future as well.”

“It’s just sad with the neighborhood,” Stephanie Collins of Hempstead told NBC New York. “I grew up around here, so to know that the neighborhood has come to this,” she explained while questioning whether a house party in the area Saturday night could have played a role.

Detectives have not announced any arrests in the case and are asking anyone with information to call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
