The 19-year-old woman killed in a triple shooting on Long Island was identified Monday as a college basketball player at Monroe University.
Amira McCleod, a guard on the Monroe University-Bronx Express, was fatally shot at a house party in Hempstead just before 11 p.m. Saturday, Newsday reported.
“The Monroe University community is devastated by the tragic loss of student Amira McCleod, a cherished member of our Express women’s basketball team,” the school said in a statement. “We are in close contact with Amira’s family, teammates and roommates, offering our full support as they navigate this unimaginable loss.”
Two 20-year-old men were wounded in the shooting and have since been released from the hospital, according to WCBS. The men were both students at Nassau County Community College.
No suspects have been arrested or identified in the case. The gunfire erupted around Willow Avenue and Kennedy Avenue at 10:55 p.m. Saturday, cops said.
“I thought it was a car and after, I heard a car zoom by,” neighbor Jagesly Castellone told News 12 Bronx. “Me and my sister ran out to go see what happened. We went to the corner and there was someone laying there on the floor and then they covered their body.”
McCleod and the Monroe-Bronx Express defeated Dutchess Community College, 67-44, earlier on Saturday. The Queens native, in her second year with the team, had two points, four rebounds and four steals in the game.
