Vermont and New York are among 21 states suing the Trump administration to block new USDA requirements that affect SNAP benefits for certain immigrants. The lawsuit is an effort to block the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s new requirements for food assistance, which state that immigrants who were granted asylum or admitted as refugees are no longer eligible for the benefits, including permanent residents. According to New York’s attorney general, as many as 35,000 New Yorkers would lose the assistance. The attorneys general claim this policy is unlawful and want a federal judge to step in.
