According to the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers, the driver was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in critical condition and underwent surgery
Fernando Mateo, the spokesman of the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers, said the man’s name is Osei Kusi. He is a driver for both Lyft and Uber.
“It seems to have been a road rage situation. It doesn’t seem to be a robbery. He had all his possessions based on the videos that [the] NYPD has been able to see,” Mateo said.
He’s not a troublemaker. He’s not a guy [who’s] out there robbing people. He’s not a guy [who’s] out there fanning himself. He’s out there working,” he added.
According to the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers, Kusi was charging his vehicle on White Plains Road a little more than an hour before the stabbing happened.
“It’s unfortunate, but it wasn’t where it involved the passenger or it involved anyone that he was picking up,” Mateo said. “It involved someone in another vehicle on the road that got into some kind of road rage with him.”
They both got out of the vehicle and the stabbing occurred.
”He was a few blocks away from his residence when the incident occurred,” he said.
Police found him unconscious and unresponsive with multiple stab wounds on his back and stomach.
According to Mateo, Kusi was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in critical condition and underwent surgery.
“We’re telling our drivers never [to] get out of [their] vehicles. That’s your shield. That’s what protects you. Once you’re out of the vehicle, anything could happen. Deescalate situations. Don’t be part, don’t take part in anything that could involve violence,” Mateo said.
No arrests have been made, and the investigation is still ongoing, according to officials.
NYPD officers are collecting evidence, including clothing and blood from the scene.
The New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers is offering $5,000 to anyone who can provide information about who committed the crime.
“We believe that there were people around that might have videotaped this,” Mateo said. “It was a real argument. It was a real shouting match.”
Anyone with information is being urged to contact NYPD Detectives Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
