New York State United Teachers, the state teacher’s union, has announced it is launching a statewide training program for educators on the science of reading.

The phonics-based approach to teaching reading comprehension has in recent years become a priority of Gov. Kathy Hochul, after two decades of shifting teaching methods among educators which focus on individual word recognition and context clues. The organization said they are trying to focus not just on what students learn, but how they learn best.

Jaime Ciffone, executive vice president of New York State United Teachers, joined Capital Tonight to discuss the program and how they hope to measure its success in the coming years.
