Dr. Maurizio Miglietta, 56, a professor of surgery at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine, was charged in New York Supreme Court with rape in the first degree, attempted rape in the first degree, and other related offenses, according to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg Jr. Miglietta was officially arrested on October 13, 2025. According to his LinkedIn, Miglietta previously worked at both NYU and Columbia as the Chief of Surgery (both acute care and trauma). He’s also cited as running the Institute of Hernia Repair, noting over 20 years of experience in medicine.
“As alleged, this prominent doctor used his position to lure a woman to his apartment under the guise of professional networking and mentorship,” Bragg said in the official press release. “Instead, he allegedly displayed a firearm that he said was loaded, and sexually assaulted her as she repeatedly said no.”
Prosecutors said Miglietta met the 28-year-old woman through a medical networking event and invited her to his Financial District apartment on June 5, 2025, to discuss her career and future business ventures. Once there, he allegedly kissed her without consent and lifted his shirt to show a firearm tucked into his waistband when she said no. He then placed the gun on a coffee table next to the woman’s head, orally raped her, and attempted to rape her vaginally, according to court documents.
The woman escaped after convincing Miglietta she needed to attend a meeting, prosecutors said. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Candace White, and the NYPD’s Manhattan Special Victims Squad, particularly Detective Lauren Liebhauser, was credited for their work on the case per the press release.
