The FDNY responded around 3 p.m. in the Concourse section of the borough to a fire inside a building on Sheridan Avenue between East 172nd Street and Mount Eden Parkway.
Firefighters quickly brought the flames under control, but while searching the floors, they found a person dead inside a separate apartment.
“It’s currently a separate incident unrelated to the fire, and it’s under investigation by the NYPD,” Deputy Chief Jospeh Duggan said.
The NYPD is now leading the death investigation, and no arrests have been made, according to officials.
The discovery came as police and firefighters were evacuating families the day after Thanksgiving.
“It was fast, right,” Audrey Bustos, a resident, said. “I just [brought] this coat. My husband doesn’t even have a coat.”
“My son woke us up. I didn’t think it was the fire department,” Mario Jose Pagan Morales, a resident, said.
FDNY officials said nine people suffered minor injuries, including two civilians, three firefighters and four NYPD officers.
The Red Cross is assisting residents who may be displaced as investigators work to determine the cause of the fire.
The identity of the person found dead has not yet been released, officials said.
