DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — A FEDERAL JURY awarded nearly $82 million to Brazilian tourist Luisa Janssen Harger Da Silva, according to PIX11. Da Silva lost an arm and a leg after fainting onto the tracks and being struck by a train at Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center station in 2016. Jurors found the MTA negligent, granting $70 million for pain and suffering, $10 million for medical costs, and $1.7 million for lost earnings. Da Silva, then 21, underwent multiple surgeries after the accident. Her suit argued that platform barriers could have prevented the injury. 

The MTA, which installed barriers at 56 stations in 2024-2025, has appealed.
