UTICA, N.Y. (WKTV) — New Yorkers can now apply for heating assistance through the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) to help manage winter heating costs.
Gov. Kathy Hochul announced that eligible households could receive up to $996, depending on their heating method.
The program’s opening was delayed due to the 43-day federal government shutdown, according to the governor’s office.
The Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance oversees HEAP.
“Many households automatically receive a HEAP payment due to their enrollment in other programs. OTDA prepared those automatic payments ahead of time, and these households can now be assured that a HEAP payment will soon be made to their heat supplier without needing to apply or take any additional action,” according to the governor’s office.
Assistance is available on a first-come, first-served basis, and households can apply online, by mail or in person at local social services departments.
The program currently serves about one million households, with an estimated 1.5 million more eligible.
