One person has been killed and eight others were injured in a “serious” personal injury crash on the New York State Thruway, according to NYS Police.

Troopers said the crash occurred around 6:45 p.m. Monday at Exit 24 on I-87 northbound near Albany. An initial investigation found a vehicle entered the Thruway from the acceleration ramp, blocking the path of a second vehicle, which hit the first vehicle.

The driver of the first vehicle was transported to Albany Medical Center, where they were later pronounced dead. Another adult and three children in the vehicle were also taken to the hospital.

All four adults in the second vehicle were also hospitalized with injuries.

Additional details, including the conditions of the surviving adults and minors, were not disclosed. Police did not say what types of vehicles were involved or if any other factors contributed to the crash.

Police said the name of the deceased driver is being withheld pending next-of-kin notification.

The Times Union reports a portion of the Thruway was blocked off with traffic being diverted off Exit 24 on Monday night. As of 9:30 p.m., traffic was still being cleared as police remained on the scene.

An investigation is ongoing, police said.
