1. Mamdani talks housing, National Guard attacks with Trump, may keep city schools chancellor

Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani told “Inside City Hall” he’s recently spoken with President Donald Trump about housing and the fatal attack on two National Guardsmen.

In the wide-ranging interview, he reiterated his opposition to federal immigration raids and highlighted a case involving a separated Chinese immigrant family. Mamdani a revealed he may keep Schools Chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos and is still weighing whether to move into Gracie Mansion.

2. NYC immigration judges drop more than 25% after recent gutting

The number of immigration judges in New York City dropped by more than 10% in a day after the Trump administration fired more than half a dozen of them on Monday, several sources confirmed with NY1.

Seven were fired on Monday, and an eighth was terminated a couple of weeks ago, according to a former judge. NY1 examined active channels on Webex — a work communication platform — for immigration judges, which showed eight missing from October to December.

3. MTA installing new fare gates to stop turnstile jumping

The MTA has begun installing new prototype fare gates at 20 stations as part of a pilot to curb turnstile jumping.

The modern, double-door arrays—already used in other cities—are harder to climb over or slide under and can detect piggybacking. The gates will eventually replace emergency exits and accommodate wheelchairs. Installation is planned at 150 stations by 2029.
