The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) Commissioner Robert S. Tucker announced Wednesday that Fire Marshals arrested Dominick Sacchetti, 21, for allegedly starting a fire at a ShopRite Supermarket on Wednesday, November 26th. Sacchetti is an employee of the store and estimated damages are expected to exceed $100,000.
Firefighters responded to 100 Greaves Lane on Staten Island at 3:44 p.m. last Wednesday for reports of a fire in one of the aisles of the ShopRite Supermarket at that location. The supermarket was open for business and busy with customers preparing for Thanksgiving when the fire occurred. The fire was extinguished without injuries to civilians or FDNY members.
“While residents of Staten Island were beginning to prepare for Thanksgiving with their families, this individual put the lives of shoppers and responding firefighters at risk,” said FDNY Commissioner Robert S. Tucker. “Thanks to the dedicated work of our Fire Marshals, this dangerous individual who put lives at risk has been apprehended.”
“Alleged to have set fire to a busy ShopRite grocery aisle late last month, Dominick Sacchetti needlessly put countless Staten Islanders who were simply shopping for food for their families as well as essential ShopRite workers in harm’s way. Acts of arson that endanger the lives of our fellow residents will not be tolerated here on Staten Island and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Charged with Arson in the Second Degree, a B Violent Felony, the men and women of my office intend to aggressively prosecute this case and ensure that justice is served,” said Richmond County District Attorney Michael E. McMahon.
FDNY Fire Marshals responded immediately and conducted a thorough investigation into the origin and cause of the fire. As part of the investigation, video surveillance cameras were reviewed, and the suspect was observed on video starting the fire on a product shelf containing paper goods. Due to the heavy fire load in that aisle, the fire started to spread quickly. A fast-acting customer was able to extinguish the fire briefly with a store fire extinguisher.
Sacchetti is charged with multiple accounts of arson, two counts of reckless endangerment, and two counts of criminal mischief. The case will be prosecuted by the Richmond County District Attorney’s Office. Bail was set at $50,000 cash/$100,000 bond.
