HEMPSTEAD, Long Island (WABC) — Nassau County police have arrested a suspect in connection with a triple shooting that killed a beloved college basketball player in Hempstead last month.
The shooting happened near Willow and Kennedy Avenues on Nov. 22 outside of a house party.
Police say Amira McLeod, 19, was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Officers found McLeod and two 20-year-old men with gunshot wounds at the scene.
The men were taken to the hospital and are recovering, but McLeod was pronounced dead.
McLeod, a guard on the Monroe University Express women’s basketball team, was killed just hours after she and her team beat Dutchess Community College in what would be her final game.
On Wednesday, police identified McLeod’s suspected killer as 18-year-old Jacob McMillan from Baldwin.
Investigators say the host of the house party, a student at Nassau Community College, got into an argument with the suspect before shots rang out.
“Some of those details aren’t quite clear, it appears that the hosts was looking to determine whether or not people were bringing in any types of weapons,” said Nassau County Police Department Det. Lt. George Darienzo.
McMillan is being charged with murder, attempted murder and criminal possession of a weapon.
The suspect had nothing to say as he was walked in handcuffs out of the Nassau County Police Department on Wednesday morning.
Police say McMillan has a criminal past and is due back in court on Friday.
Meanwhile it’s been a difficult week for the Monroe University women’s basketball team. They held a moment of silence during a home game on Tuesday night.
They won the game but it was with heavy hearts.
“You talk about the five stages of grief, I think some of them are hitting each each of those in different aspects,” said Coach Damel Ling.
Ling says there are discussions about retiring McLeod’s number.
