Around NYC
1. Mayoral candidates go head-to-head in first debate ahead of general election
The pattern repeated itself again and again in the first mayoral debate Thursday night: Andrew Cuomo would take any available opportunity to try to tear down Zohran Mamdani.
Mamdani would punch right back, and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa would be left in the middle, trying to point fingers in both directions.
2. City sues over funding pulled by federal government over transgender student policies
The city is suing the federal government over nearly $50 million in funding for magnet schools it pulled over the city’s policies regarding transgender students.
The city’s public schools have long allowed transgender students to use restrooms, locker rooms and changing rooms, and play on sports teams, matching their gender identity. But the federal government says that violates Title IX and demanded the city separate students in those spaces based on their biological sex. Doing so would violate state law in New York.
3. Mahmoud Khalil can freely travel around U.S. as he fights his deportation case, judge rules
A federal judge has lifted travel restrictions for Mahmoud Khalil, allowing the Palestinian activist to speak at rallies and other events across the U.S. as he fights his deportation case brought by the Trump administration.
Khalil, who was freed from a Louisiana immigration jail in June, had asked a federal magistrate judge to lift the restrictions that limited his travel to New York, New Jersey, Washington, D.C., Louisiana and Michigan.
