A Staten Island school held an assembly last month to honor veterans for Veterans Day.

Sacred Heart School in West Brighton held an assembly on Nov. 12 in its auditorium to hold a tribute to veterans, filled with poetry and patriotic songs.

The auditorium was decorated with red, white, and blue, as students took the stage to sing.

A traditional White Table Ceremony was also held by students, which honors soldiers who have died in combat, as well as those declared missing in action, or held as prisoners of war. During the ceremony, a small table is set for one, with a white tablecloth, a red rose and a yellow ribbon displayed. A bread dish displays a slice of lemon and a pinch of salt. An inverted water glass is also displayed. There is one empty chair at the table to symbolize the soldier who is missing.

The assembly culminated with an inspiring talk by wounded warrior U.S. Marine Corporal Scott Nokes, who is a blind paraplegic. Nokes was introduced by Sacred Heart alum Stephen Siller Jr.
