The historic Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Terminal officially opened to the public on Monday. The restored transit hub is located right behind KeyBank Center on South Park Avenue.
The restoration project, funded by the state and federal government, has been in the works for a decade.
“The connective tissue of bringing people together is the transportation system, and this light rail system that, for now 40 years strong, has brought people into downtown Buffalo, now has a bigger vision for the future. I look forward to expanding on this. I look forward to connecting the north campus of the University at Buffalo right in here,” Rep. Tim Kennedy said.

This project emphasizes the commitment that the NFTA has made in giving residents and visitors more options to get to and from Downtown Buffalo.
“This is such an exciting day for our community to come together and celebrate this major milestone in the renovation of the DL&W Station.” Said Kim Minkel, executive director, NFTA. “The opening of the DL&W is a significant event; it symbolizes the revival of a historic landmark and the expansion of the Metro rail system. We are proud to return this building to the public.”
NFTA officials say this will help support the revitalization of the Canalside and Cobblestone districts.
This is the first extension of the light rail system since it opened in 1985.
